One of the key things in Sports Medicine is to provide examples in your answers. Hard tissue injuries are one type of injury and an example from this year could easily be Ben Ross, who broke his arm during an arm wrestle with Wendell Sailor.

This injury is classified as an indirect hard tissue injury, because there was no external force at the sight of injury. Instead, this hard tissue injury was indirect, resulting from the forces within the body that were acting on the arm.

It is important to note, that even though Wendell was placing plenty of force onto Ben’s hand, he was not in contact with the place of injury, this means it is still classified as an indirect injury.

This injury is a hard tissue injury, because it is a broken bone. Ben broke his arm in three (3) spots and suffered a spiral fracture to his elbow. He described the pain as “The most excruciating thing that I have ever felt!”.

This is not the first time I have heard about broken arms during arm wrestling. At an ACHPER HSC Enrichment Day a few years ago I met a student who had broken his arm trying to beat his HSC PDHPE teacher in an arm wrestle. He also suffered a hard tissue indirect injury.

In the management of this injury, the arm was quickly immobilised and medical treatment was immediately sourced. You can hear Fatty in the background saying they will need an ambulance. You can read further on the resultant surgery that Ben needed to fix his arm here.
