Every two years the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare release Australia’s HealthAustralia’s Health is one of the main publications HSC PDHPE students need to interact with. Many HSC PDHPE teachers will get their students to read through the smaller publication  Australia’s Health in Brief, BUT I always encourage my students, particularly those who are looking to get into the top bands, to look at the more detailed and lengthier publication.

Each publication of  Australia’s Health has a slightly different focus. In previous years  Australia’s Health has examined socioeconomic status and health (2010) or health and risk behaviours (2012), but in 2014 Australia’s Health added health through your life.

As you go through Australia’s Health publications. You may wish to chose an older version, as the information provided each year chances slightly, meaning you may find more information on a particular health priority issue, such as cancer, diabetes or CVD, OR priority population group, such as: low SES, rural and remote, or overseas-born people. While the 2014 Australia’s Health is the latest publication, it may not prove to be the one you need for your study.

If you are struggling, I suggest you do a search for key terms in the Australia’s Health publication when you open it, to find the relevant information quickly. If it is not there, open another one and repeat the search.

In addition the Australia’s Health publications, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare also release Australia’s Welfarewhich is released each year between the Australia’s Health publications.  Australia’s Welfare is another good source to interact with as it often includes information of particular use for people with disability, our ageing population and volunteers and carers. The latest  Australia’s Welfare was released this year.

Australia's HealthFinally, when examining Australia’s Health the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s website is very useful. It is full of publications related to specific subjects, which can be navigated both through the subjects tab at the top, or the publications tab. Often it is useful to use both when completing an assessment task, or doing research in preparation for an exam.
